Montserrat

Montserrat is a geometric sans-serif with a tall x-height and a wide, even, low-contrast structure — which is exactly what makes it shine as a heading face. It stays clean and commanding at large sizes, and its weight range from Thin to Black lets you build a whole hierarchy without leaving the family. Because the letterforms are modern and neutral rather than quirky, Montserrat sits comfortably beside almost any body text: warm serifs for editorial contrast, or a humanist sans when you want an all-sans system. The one thing to manage is its generous proportions — partners with much smaller x-heights, like classical oldstyle serifs, need to be sized up a notch to stay balanced.

The trick with Montserrat is that it leads. Its geometry and tall x-height give it presence, so the strongest pairings give it a quieter partner to recede underneath it — a readable serif or a humanist sans that carries long text without competing for attention. That clear lead-and-support relationship is why a serif body like Merriweather or Lora works so reliably: the class contrast creates instant hierarchy, and matched x-heights keep the two sizes feeling like one system rather than two fonts stuck together.
