Oswald

Oswald is a condensed grotesque — a modern reworking of the classic 'gothic' headline types — built tall, narrow and strong. That extreme condensation is its whole identity: it packs impact into a small horizontal space, which makes it superb for headlines, posters and uppercase display, and unsuitable for body text, where its narrowness tires the eye. Pairing Oswald is therefore about contrast of width — give it a normal-width, readable body font, and the difference between the tight condensed heading and the open body does the hierarchy work for you.

WHY IT WORKS  //  PAIRING LOGIC

Why Oswald pairs so well.

Oswald only leads. Its condensed, tall structure makes punchy headlines that demand a calm, normal-width body beneath them — and the wider the body relative to Oswald's narrowness, the cleaner the hierarchy reads. Readable serifs like Merriweather and Lora are its strongest partners, because the width contrast and the sans/serif class contrast stack together for unmistakable separation. Neutral sans bodies like Roboto or Open Sans also work well, leaning on the width difference alone to keep the two roles distinct.
