Roboto

Roboto is the quiet workhorse of the web — a neo-grotesque sans built on a mechanical skeleton but softened by open, friendly curves. Its tall x-height and even, low-contrast strokes make it exceptionally legible at small sizes, which is why it's as comfortable carrying body text as it is setting a heading. That dual nature changes how you pair it: unlike a display face that can only lead, Roboto can take either role. Its strongest partners are therefore one of two kinds — a member of its own engineered superfamily, or a characterful serif that supplies the personality Roboto deliberately withholds.

Why Roboto pairs so well.

Roboto pairs well precisely because it is neutral. It doesn't fight for attention, which makes it an ideal body face under an expressive heading — a high-contrast serif like Playfair Display, or a sturdy text serif like Merriweather — where the class contrast creates clean hierarchy and Roboto's tall x-height keeps the two sizes in harmony. And because Roboto ships with the richest matched family on Google Fonts, the safest pairings of all are in-house: a Roboto Slab heading over a Roboto body is guaranteed to feel like one system, because it is one.
